Monarch Gardens was founded in 1994 as CM Design. We are a Marin County, community-based business owned and operated by the husband and wife team, Dave and Carolyn Anderson. We bring extensive horticultural knowledge and keen space planning expertise to every project. As a licensed landscape design/build company, we stay current on environmental issues, innovations and trends in the industry while respecting local climates and habitats.
We pride ourselves on our dedication to communicating clearly with regards to options, materials, estimates, and scheduling. We are also committed to providing consistently responsive, professional, and thoughtful service to our clients; and as a result, we reap the rewards of long-term relationships with them and their gardens.
How and Why We Became Monarch Gardens:
Before Monarch Gardens got its name, we were already operating our landscape design business. The butterfly had always been part of our logo, but we wanted a new name. At the same time, we had the opportunity to build a truly unique and stunning beachfront garden for one of our clients. We planted milkweed and butterfly plants throughout in order to attract the Monarch butterflies, and they certainly arrived. One day, while we were tending to the garden, our client’s daughter discovered more than 50 chrysalises attached to various spots in the yard, and we had one of those “a-ha” moments. Just as the butterfly life cycle transforms from butterfly – to egg – to chrysalis – to caterpillar – to butterfly, the gardens we design and create follow a cycle of transformation, changing, growing, and living to bring your dream to reality and harmonize with your lifestyle.
The Monarch butterfly is also an ideal representation of our commitment to the environment. Butterflies are an environmental indicator species, which means that they are one of the first species to decline based on an unstable or toxic environment, making them very vulnerable. The butterfly is only apparent when the eco system around it is healthy and vibrant.
One of the reasons we started this business is to make a beneficial change in the environment. We live in a world where degradation of nature is a problem. Everyone needs to take small steps to contribute positively to the planet by conserving and restoring our natural resources. Through our business, we contribute by gardening organically, planting appropriately, and educating the community and our clients. By creating safe habitats, we help mend some of the damage done by environmentally irresponsible practices.
