The most important job we do is to interpret your garden wish list into something that makes sense for the site. When we design, we create the plan for the person, the house, and the site. In doing so, we need to consider FORM, FUNCTION, and AESTHETIC. But what does that really mean?

  • FORM – the shape of the site; what it looks like now; and how you want it to transform; what style do you envision?
  • FUNCTION – how you plan to use the space; how much of the space is usable; what utilities might you need?
  • AESTHETIC – what is pleasing to the senses; how you want to feel in your garden; what do you think is beautiful?

We begin by meeting you at your site, do a walk through, ask a lot of questions, listen to your ideas, wish list and preliminary budget, evaluate the garden space, and discuss some options.

When we look at the site, these are some of the things we consider:

  • your lifestyle
  • how you want to use the garden now, and in the future
  • the architecture and design of the home and interior
  • accessibility by family or guests
  • children and pets
  • traffic and flow patterns (how you move in your space)
  • the natural ecology and habitat for that site
  • the location and sun exposure of the garden
  • the grade or slope of the land
  • the drainage, irrigation, and water use
  • whether utilities are required, like electrical or gas lines
  • the type of maintenance required for desired plan

As you can see, there is much to reflect upon when we have our initial consultation. Our emphasis is on working closely with you throughout the entire process, and the ultimate goal is to design, plan, install, and maintain the garden of your dreams.
